Call for Posters

Call for Posters

The submission period for poster proposals has closed.

The annual Research Computing Exhibition will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, on the 4th and 5th floors of Walter Library. The Research Computing Exhibition includes a judged poster session with travel awards presented to the competition finalists.

All researchers using Research Computing resources are encouraged to submit posters. Research Computing resources include systems, software, and support from MSI, U-Spatial, DSI, and IIB. Examples:

  • MSI supercomputers
  • Software available through MSI
  • U-Spatial resources such as Planet or Story Maps
  • DSI funding from the Seed Grant or Graduate Assistantship programs
  • IIB partnership
  • Etc.

To be eligible for a prize, the lead author must be someone other than a faculty member/PI.

Posters should be submitted in one of the following categories:

  • Physical sciences and engineering
  • Life sciences and engineering
  • Social sciences, arts, and humanities
  • Other

A Grand Prize winner and two runners-up will be chosen from each group. Winners will receive travel awards that can be used for any professional travel, including conferences, meetings of professional associations, or other travel related to your research.

How to submit a poster proposal (due March 6, 2025):

If you would like to participate in the poster session, please contact [email protected] to get access to the Intent to Participate form.

When we receive your poster proposal, we will send an email with more information about submitting your poster for judging. Please note: This is not an automated response, so you won't receive it immediately. If you haven't heard back after two work days, please contact [email protected]. Emails will be sent to the Corresponding Author listed on the Intent to Participate form.

Your completed poster, in PDF format, will be due for judging on March 26, 2025.

Judging Information:

The judges will select the winners for each group using the PDFs. Prizes will be awarded at an award ceremony after the poster session.

Posters will be judged on:

  • How much did using Research Computing resources contribute to the outcome of the research presented?
  • How well is the use of Research Computing and the research communicated on the poster?
  • How well is the importance of this scientific investigation communicated?

Please contact [email protected] with any questions.

Information for Poster Authors

Beginning at 10:30 a.m., you can put up your poster on the 5th floor of Walter. Posters will be assigned numbers, and maps of the poster display area will be available. RC staff members will be available to help you hang your poster; come to the 5th floor elevator bay. We'd like to have all the posters up by 12:45. You must bring your own printed poster to the event. We would appreciate it if you would leave your poster up for the entire event. If you can’t pick it up that afternoon, we’ll be taking them down on Friday and will store them until you can get it.

Our poster boards are 46 inches wide x 48 inches high.

RESEARCH COMPUTING MUST BE INCLUDED IN THE ACKNOWLEDGMENTS ON YOUR POSTER, either as a text acknowledgment or by use of the Research Computing wordmark. You should also acknowledge the RC sub-unit(s) whose resources you used. The wordmark is available in a Google folder that you can access through the link in your Confirmation email.

Posters will be judged on the following criteria:

  • How much did using RC resources contribute to the outcome of the research presented?
  • How well is the use of RC resources communicated on the poster?
  • How well is the importance of this scientific investigation communicated?

Please do not assume that the judges will be experts in your field; write for an educated, general-science audience. Ensure that your poster clearly indicates your effective and appropriate use of RC resources.

The posters will be judged prior to the RC Exhibition to determine the top poster and two runners-up in each category. To participate in the poster competition, you must submit a PDF of your poster for judging.

We are currently planning for the poster session to take place during 1 – 3:45 p.m. on April 24. You will not need to be at your poster the entire time. We will divide the posters into three groups; each group will be at their posters for 45 minutes.

To submit your PDF (due March 26, 2025):

  • Make sure you’ve acknowledged Research Computing (and MSI, if appropriate) on your poster, either in your Acknowledgements section or by using the wordmarks.
  • To upload your poster PDF, go to the 2025 MSI Research Computing Exhibition folder; the link is provided in your Confirmation email.
    • You should be able to drag your poster PDF into this folder.
    • NOTE: You must use your University of Minnesota email address to access this folder.
    • If you’re not at the U of M Twin Cities, or if you’re having problems accessing the folder, please email Tracey Majoros in MSI to have the folder directly shared with you.
  • Please name your poster using the format Lastname Firstname First Words of Title, e.g. Gopher_Goldy_Using_Supercomputers_to_Study_Science
  • Once you have uploaded your PDF, please send an email to [email protected] to let us know that you have done so.
    • For privacy and security, we will remove your poster from the folder as soon as we know it’s there. If you need to submit a revised poster, just upload the new poster and let us know ([email protected]) about the substitution.
