MSI PI Richard James Designs Devices Based on Origami
The Fall 2024 cover feature for the College of Science and Engineering magazine, Inventing Tomorrow, describes work by MSI PI Richard James (professor, Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics) and his former graduate student Huan Liu, who received her PhD in 2024. Professor James and Dr. Liu conducted research in curved-tile origami, which is a variation on the folding technique that results in curved and spherical forms. Applications include more efficient wind turbines and better brain stents. The article can be found on the CSE website: Origami engineering: An unfolding story.
Professor James uses MSI for research into singular materials, which are materials that exhibit extraordinary behavior under various conditions.
