Using AI to Classify PRRS Viruses
MSI PI Kimberly VanderWaal (associate professor, Veterinary Population Medicine) is featured in the Fall 2024 issue of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) publication Profiles. The article describes how a team of CVM faculty and researchers are using artificial intelligence to classify tens of thousands of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) viruses that have been collected over decades. PRRS is a major concern for swine breeders; it now costs the pork industry over a billion dollars per year. The article can be read on the CVM website: AI brings 30 years of data to the real world.
Professor VanderWaal uses MSI resources for investigations into pathogen transmission dynamics.
