How do I get a Person of Interest (POI) designation?
All MSI users must have a UMN Internet ID. If a user does not have a UMN Internet ID, the PI can get the user a Person of Interest (POI) account, which allows access to UMN systems.
POI Accounts
To set up a POI account, the following information is needed.
If you are a UMN-affiliated PI, faculty, or staff, send the below to your department's HR representative. Ask your HR representative to follow the Person of Interest instructions on the HR website and let your HR representative know that they should use the “ESP" or "External Service Provider” POI account type. Once the account has been set up, the new user will need their new internet id and id number to claim and setup their account by contacting OIT.
If you are a PI who is external to the UMN and do not have a relationship with a UMN department, send the below as a request to the Help Desk
Name
Address, this can be a business address
Phone number, this can be a business phone
Email address
Your title
Institution name
Date of birth
Attestation: The PI requesting the POI account (either for themselves or another member of their home institution) must attest if this new POI does or does not fall under one or more of the Minimum POI Inclusion Criteria. If you attest that this POI does not meet any of these criteria, you are responsible for notifying MSI of any changes in the future that would align this POI with one or more criteria. This criteria determines whether the POI must take a UMN training module. The following POIs are required to complete the educational module on Preventing Sexual Misconduct, Discrimination, and Retaliation:
Minimum POI Inclusion Criteria
- POIs who are responsible for coaching, mentoring, advising, supervising, or instructing University of Minnesota members--or who otherwise hold a position of authority over University of Minnesota members-- as a part of their POI role.
- POIs who have regular one-on-one interactions with UMN students as a part of their POI role, whether in-person, virtually, or via email.
- POIs who have a significant presence on campus or at a University of Minnesota facility as a part of their POI role. At a minimum, POIs who spend more than an estimated 40 hours/year on campus or at a University of Minnesota facility will be considered to have significant presence and must complete the educational module.
When a POI user no longer needs access, their POI relationship will need to be deactivated. Instructions for deactivating the POI designation can be found on the Inactivating a Person of Interest / POI instruction page.
Note: As of September 1, 2016, MSI no longer accepts sponsored accounts. Sponsored accounts and their associated Internet IDs do not meet the security requirements to be added to an MSI group. PI groups must have POI status for any external user they wish to add to their group.
